Troost-Ekong Warns Super Eagles: Another World Cup Miss Cannot Be Repeated

Nigeria’s World Cup dream suffered another setback, but former captain William Troost-Ekong believes the disappointment could become the turning point that sends the Super Eagles back to football’s biggest stage.

Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong says Nigeria must use their failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup as a lesson as they begin preparations for the next qualifying campaign SuperEaglesNG.com reports.

Nigeria missed out on the tournament after losing to the Democratic Republic of Congo in the African play-offs, extending their absence from football’s biggest competition.

Troost-Ekong’s Reaction

Troost-Ekong described the setback as disappointing but said it should strengthen Nigeria’s desire to return to the World Cup.

Speaking to SuperSport, the former defender said the players remained motivated to help the country return to the global stage.

“The motivation has always been there. All of us are incredibly eager to see Nigeria back at the World Cup, and missing out again only increases that desire,” he said.

Troost-Ekong added that Nigeria had enough quality within the squad to compete at the tournament, pointing to the progress made by several players since the team’s last appearance at the World Cup in 2018.

Nigeria’s Back-To-Back Absences

The 2026 qualification failure means Nigeria will miss the World Cup for a second consecutive edition.

The Super Eagles last featured at the tournament in Russia in 2018, having qualified for six of the previous seven editions before their recent struggles.

Their latest disappointment followed an inconsistent qualifying campaign, which ended with defeat by DR Congo in the African play-offs.

Lessons From Previous Failures

Troost-Ekong said Nigeria must review their preparation and identify areas that need improvement before the next qualification cycle.

“It would have been wonderful to see them compete, but I also think this serves as an important lesson,” he said.

“We need to reflect on our preparation and identify what needs to change to reach the next level ahead of the next World Cup.”

The former captain also rejected suggestions that a lack of commitment contributed to the team’s failure, saying the players remained determined to improve.

“I have never felt there was a lack of motivation or commitment from the players. I simply believe several areas need to change.”

Importance Of Immediate Action

Troost-Ekong said Nigeria must begin making changes early rather than waiting until another qualification campaign begins.

He believes a sustainable plan is needed to improve the team’s chances of returning to the World Cup and competing with the world’s leading sides.

The 2030 Target

Nigeria’s next major objective will be securing qualification for the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

Troost-Ekong said the disappointment of missing the 2026 tournament should provide motivation for improvement as the Super Eagles look to return to football’s biggest stage.
