Arthur Okonkwo has earned another opportunity to establish himself with Nigeria after Charlton Athletic confirmed his selection for the Super Eagles’ opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches. The 24-year-old goalkeeper will join Eric Chelle’s squad for matches against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau later this month.
Charlton announced the selection on September 7, with the club stating: “Arthur Okonkwo has been called up to the Nigeria squad for their upcoming AFCON qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.” The announcement confirms that Okonkwo remains part of Chelle’s plans as Nigeria begins its Group L campaign.
Okonkwo enters the camp with two senior Nigeria appearances already behind him. He made his international debut during the 2026 Unity Cup and started Nigeria’s victories over Zimbabwe and Jamaica, keeping a clean sheet in both matches.
The September fixtures will give Okonkwo his first opportunity to play in a competitive qualifier for Nigeria. His previous two appearances came in the Unity Cup, while he remained an unused substitute during Nigeria’s June friendlies against Poland and Portugal.
Competition for the starting goalkeeper position remains open, with Okonkwo competing alongside Stanley Nwabali and Maduka Okoye. His two clean sheets for Nigeria have strengthened his case, although Chelle must decide whether to retain the goalkeeper who has featured prominently in previous Super Eagles matches or introduce Okonkwo in the qualifiers.
At club level, Okonkwo has started four Championship matches for Charlton since joining on loan from Wrexham. He produced eight saves against West Ham in his league debut, kept a clean sheet against Preston and made two saves against West Brom before Charlton lost 4–0 to Stoke City on September 5.
Nigeria will host Madagascar at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on September 25 at 4pm Nigerian time. CAF has scheduled the second Group L fixture for September 29, when Nigeria will travel to Guinea-Bissau for a 4pm GMT kick-off.
The qualifying group also contains Tanzania, who have already secured their place at the 2027 AFCON as co-hosts. Nigeria therefore enters the campaign with its qualification position tied to the group’s remaining qualifying places.
For Okonkwo, the immediate target is a competitive appearance for the Super Eagles. The upcoming double-header will place him in contention for minutes against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau while Chelle assesses his goalkeeping options for the qualification campaign.
