‘Those People Need To Go’ – Mikel Calls For Major Changes In NFF

John Obi Mikel says Nigeria has everything needed to succeed in football—except the right leadership. Find out why the former captain believes sweeping reforms can transform the game.

Former Nigeria captain John Obi Mikel has called for major changes to the country’s football administration, saying the game cannot progress under its current leadership — SuperEaglesNG.com reports.

The 38-year-old said he has turned down several invitations to take up a role in Nigerian football because he does not want to work with the current administrators.

Speaking on Peter Crouch’s podcast, Mikel said officials had remained in office for too long without improving the game.

“We don’t have people that know about football,” Mikel said.

“They occupy their positions year after year, controlling everything. They are reluctant to relinquish their power and the financial benefits that come with it.”

Mikel Questions Funding And Leadership

Meanwhile, Mikel said he wants to see meaningful reform before he considers returning to Nigerian football.

“I have received calls to return and get involved, but I have declined. Those individuals need to go. I cannot work with people who do not share the same objectives as I do,” he said.

He also questioned how football authorities spend available resources. According to Mikel, better financial management would raise standards across the sport.

“The goal is to improve the standard of football in Nigeria, which can be achieved quite easily. The funds must go to the right areas,” he added.

As a result, Mikel believes Nigerian football can improve if administrators focus on long-term development instead of personal interests.

His comments also add to the wider debate over governance and accountability in Nigerian football. In recent years, many supporters and stakeholders have called for greater transparency and stronger leadership.

Mikel retired from professional football in 2022 after an 18-year career. During that time, he won the UEFA Champions League, two Premier League titles and four FA Cups with Chelsea. He also captained Nigeria to the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations title.
