Former Super Eagles striker Yakubu Aiyegbeni has named his greatest Super Eagles XI, with Vincent Enyeama, Jay-Jay Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu and other former Nigeria stars making his team.
Yakubu revealed his selection in a video shared by the official Super Eagles X account on Wednesday, August 12, 2026.
Yakubu’s Greatest Super Eagles XI
Yakubu chose Vincent Enyeama in goal, while Bright Osayi-Samuel, Joseph Yobo, Danny Shittu and Celestine Babayaro formed his defence.
In midfield, he picked Sunday Oliseh and Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha, with Finidi George and Julius Aghahowa on the wings.
Yakubu then selected himself and Nwankwo Kanu in attack.
His XI is:
Goalkeeper: Vincent Enyeama
Defenders: Bright Osayi-Samuel, Joseph Yobo, Danny Shittu, Celestine Babayaro
Midfielders: Sunday Oliseh, Jay-Jay Okocha
Wingers: Finidi George, Julius Aghahowa
Forwards: Yakubu Aiyegbeni, Nwankwo Kanu.
Bright Osayi-Samuel provides the biggest surprise in the team. The defender is the only player from a more recent generation among a group dominated by players from Nigeria’s 1990s and 2000s sides.
Mikel Obi also misses out, as Yakubu preferred Oliseh alongside Okocha.
Yakubu had previously compared the two midfielders in 2020, saying: “Mikel is a very, very good player [but] there’s no way you can compare Mikel with Sunday Oliseh.”
He then added: “Oliseh is a better player than Mikel. Mikel won a lot of trophies but Oliseh was unbelievable.”
Victor Osimhen also misses the XI, with Yakubu selecting Kanu and himself as his two forwards. Obafemi Martins received an honourable mention.
Yakubu scored 21 goals for Nigeria during his international career, while Kanu played a key role in Nigeria’s Olympic gold-medal-winning team at Atlanta 1996.
