Super Eagles striker Terem Moffi has joined Hamburger SV permanently from OGC Nice and will make his Bundesliga debut this season.

Hamburg confirmed the transfer on Monday after Moffi completed his medical and signed his contract. The 27-year-old will wear the No. 9 shirt, while reports put the fee at €2 million plus €500,000 in add-ons.

Moffi spent the second half of the 2025/26 season on loan at FC Porto, scoring twice in 15 competitive matches. He previously scored 24 goals in 72 appearances for Nice after joining the French club in 2023.

Moffi said Hamburg coach Merlin Polzin persuaded him to accept the transfer.

“The coach was really very convincing in our conversations.” He also pointed to Hamburg’s supporters and the club’s plans. “The location, with its fantastic fans, and the club’s overall direction also played a role in my decision.”

Moffi’s father recognised the club when the striker told him about the offer.

“When I told my father about their interest, he immediately knew which club it was and was full of excitement.”

Hamburg sporting director Claus Costa highlighted Moffi’s strength and determination in front of goal.

“Terem is a striker who is difficult to contain because of his physicality, determination and style of play.”

Moffi can now challenge Taiwo Awoniyi’s Nigerian Bundesliga record. Awoniyi scored 15 goals for Union Berlin in the 2021/22 season, so Moffi needs 16 goals to set a new Nigerian single-season mark.

Jonathan Akpoborie holds the Nigerian Bundesliga career record with 61 goals. Moffi needs 62 goals to move past him.

At Hamburg, Moffi can also target Kevin Keegan’s record for a foreign player. Keegan scored 17 Bundesliga goals for Hamburg in 1978/79, leaving Moffi one goal behind Awoniyi’s 15-goal mark and two behind Keegan’s 17-goal mark.

Hamburg will face Borussia Dortmund in their opening Bundesliga match after meeting Verl in the DFB-Pokal.
