Gernot Rohr was born on 28 June 1953 in Mannheim, West Germany. He played as a defender, spending his youth years with VfL Neckarau, from 1961 to 1972.

He started his senior career Bayern Munich, making six appearances between 1972 and 1974, followed by a season with Waldhof Mannheim, where he played 21 matches and scored one goal. From 1975 to 1977 he represented Kickers Offenbach in 62 games, adding one more goal to his record.

Rohr later joined Bordeaux in 1977, and played there until 1989 with 352 appearances and 13 goals.

Early Management Career

After retiring as a player, Rohr moved into management, starting with Bordeaux in 1990. He returned for the 1991–1992 spell and again in the 1996 season. In 1996, he led Girondins de Bordeaux to the UEFA Cup final but lost to Bayern Munich over two legs. This was after a run that included a 3–0 win over AC Milan in the quarter-finals.

He later worked as sports director of Eintracht Frankfurt from October 1998 to April 1999 before continuing his coaching career in several clubs and countries. Between 1999 and 2000 he managed Créteil, and from 2002 to 2005 he was in charge of Nice. Rohr coached Young Boys from 2005 to 2006, Ajaccio from 2007 to 2008, and Étoile Sahel from 2008 to 2009 before being dismissed on 15 May 2009 after finishing third in the league.

Shortly after, on 9 June 2009, he became the head coach of FC Nantes in Ligue 2, but by 3 December 2009 he was dismissed and replaced by Jean-Marc Furlan.

African National Team Management

On 21 February 2010, he took over the Gabon national football team, replacing Alain Giresse, and later became manager of Niger in September 2012 before resigning in October 2014.

His time as manager of Burkina Faso ended on 22 December 2015 when he was sacked.

Rohr’s next step involved the Nigeria national football team in August 2016 after being appointed by Amaju Pinnick. He won his first game in charge, a 1–0 victory against Tanzania in Uyo, though his first defeat came on 10 June in a 2–0 home loss to South Africa.

Achievements with Nigeria

Under his leadership, Nigeria became the first African team to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup after defeating Zambia 1–0 on 7 October 2017.

He guided the Super Eagles to a third-place finish at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, and on 27 May 2020, a contractual agreement was completed for him to extend his stay with the team.

His targets included winning the 2021 Africa Nation’s Cup in Cameroon and qualifying for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

On 12 December 2021, he was sacked even though Nigeria had qualified for both the tournament and the final round of the World Cup playoffs.

Managerial Career Post-Nigeria

In 2023, Rohr became the manager of the Benin national team. His managerial record up to 18 November 2025 included 145 matches, with 57 wins, 40 draws and 48 losses, giving him an overall win percentage of 39.31.

His time with various national teams produced different results. He had a 42.11 percent win rate with Gabon, 13.04 percent with Niger, 27.27 percent with Burkina Faso, 54.69 percent with Nigeria, and 28.57 percent with Benin.

Gernot Rohr Wife

Gernot Rohr has been married three times and has five children, including sons named Oscar Rohr and Emmanuel Rohr. Very little is known about his wives. Some reports claim that one of his wives is from Madagascar and runs a hotel on the French island of Réunion, but these claims have never been officially confirmed.

Official biographies and football reference sites acknowledge that Rohr has been married, yet they do not release the names or other personal details of his spouses. In short, Rohr has deliberately kept his family private. While rumours exist, there is no reliable public record revealing the identity of any of his wives.

Gernot Rohr Salary

Gernot Rohr, when he became coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, had a salary reported in different ways over time. In 2016, he earned $47,000 a month, which converted to about ₦12.1 million at the exchange rate of ₦257.7 per dollar. During the early part of his tenure, some reports said he earned around $45,000 a month, approximately ₦11.6 million. By January 2019, after a pay increase, his monthly salary was $55,000, about ₦19.9 million at the 2019 rate of ₦361.4 per dollar.

The Nigeria Football Federation clarified that the $55,000 figure was correct, not the $60,000 sometimes claimed. Because Rohr was paid in US dollars, the equivalent in naira fluctuated with exchange rates. By December 2025, when the dollar trades around ₦1,466–₦1,470, $45,000 would equal about ₦66–67 million, $47,000 about ₦68–69 million, and $55,000 roughly ₦80–81 million.

Reports from 2021 indicate Rohr was owed several months of unpaid wages when he left the Super Eagles. His actual take-home amounts, therefore, varied. After leaving Nigeria, he accepted a job with another national team that paid roughly half of what he earned in Nigeria. When his contract ended prematurely, FIFA awarded him a lump sum compensation of $377,879.46 for breach of contract. This was equivalent to roughly ₦545–550 million at the 2025 rate.

Net Worth

His salaries at different times don’t show Gernot Rohr’s full net worth, which depends on savings, investments, taxes, and living costs—but some websites claim his net worth is over $1.5 million, while others suggest around $3 million, but these are speculative.

Gernot Rohr Sacking

Despite these achievements, the Nigeria Football Federation sacked him on 12 December 2021, appointing Augustine Eguavoen as interim coach. The NFF cited shaky results, including a tense draw in a key qualifier, and a decline in team performance as reasons for ending his five-year, four-month tenure early, even though Nigeria had qualified for both the 2022 World Cup qualifiers and the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

Rohr challenged the termination as a breach of contract, and in May 2022, FIFA ruled in his favour, ordering the NFF to pay him $378,000 (about 157 million naira). FIFA also warned that failure to pay could lead to sanctions, including restrictions on development funds.

Afterwards, Rohr became head coach of Benin’s national team, accepting a significant pay cut.

Gernot Rohr Stats for Nigeria

Across all teams Gernot Rohr has coached, he has overseen around 473 matches, achieving roughly 185 wins and 147 losses, giving him a win rate of about 39 percent.

He was head coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria from August 9, 2016, to December 2021. During this period, he managed around 64 games, with approximately 35 wins, 16 draws, and 13 losses. Some sources report slightly different numbers due to differences in counting friendlies versus competitive matches.

By November 2019, his record was 29 wins, 11 draws, and 9 losses, with Nigeria scoring 49 goals, giving a winning ratio of about 59.18 percent. Under Rohr, Nigeria qualified for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, the 2019 and 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, and finished third in the 2019 AFCON. Nigeria reportedly never lost an away qualifier under him.

While results were often not bad, critics viewed his style of play as slow.
