Nigeria international Alex Iwobi has deleted Fulham-related posts from Instagram after supporters jeered him during the 3-2 defeat to Crystal Palace. The midfielder left in the 82nd minute, with some fans responding with ironic cheers as he walked towards the touchline.
Palace then completed a comeback after the hosts had taken the lead twice. Josh King opened the scoring in the 11th minute, César Palacios restored the advantage in the 42nd minute, but Tyrick Mitchell scored twice before Ben Chilwell struck the winning goal.
Iwobi played 83 minutes and covered the second-highest distance among his teammates. He started each of the side’s opening league fixtures under manager Álvaro Arbeloa.
Before the Palace game, the midfielder called for results after the 1-0 loss to Sunderland. “Nowadays, it don’t even matter per performance, you have to just get results,” he said. Iwobi also said the performances could “point us in the right direction”.
The latest social-media development follows a similar incident after Nigeria lost the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final to Ivory Coast. Iwobi removed football-related posts from his account after receiving heavy online abuse following the match.
Emile Smith Rowe has also removed football-related content from Instagram during the difficult opening weeks at Craven Cottage. The former Arsenal midfielder has appeared twice from the bench and remained an unused substitute in the other league fixture.
The side will next visit Anfield to face Liverpool, who have won their opening three league matches. The Reds will host Arbeloa’s team this weekend.
