Taiwo Awoniyi is set to leave Nottingham Forest for Coventry City after Frank Lampard pushed for the signing of another striker before the new Premier League season.
Coventry have agreed a permanent deal with Forest for the Nigeria international, with Awoniyi completing his medical ahead of the transfer.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the agreement on Saturday, 15 August.
“Coventry City agree deal to sign Taiwo Awoniyi from Nottingham Forest, here we go!”
Romano also reported: “Club to club agreement done, permanent move and also understand medical is now ongoing.”
He then described Awoniyi as a: “New striker for Frank Lampard.”
Lampard wanted another forward with Premier League experience after Coventry secured promotion to the top flight.
Awoniyi has played in the Premier League since joining Forest from Union Berlin in 2022. He scored 21 league goals for the club and helped Forest establish themselves in the division.
The 29-year-old struggled for regular starts during the 2025/26 campaign, however. He made 17 Premier League appearances and scored four goals, with Chris Wood and Igor Jesus competing for places in attack.
Awoniyi started only three league matches last season, according to reports.
His move to Coventry will give him another opportunity to play regular Premier League football under Lampard.
Coventry have prepared for their return to the top flight by adding several players to their squad, but Lampard still wanted another experienced striker before the campaign began.
The reported transfer fee stands at about £17 million, although some reports have not confirmed the final amount.
Awoniyi could also link up with fellow Nigeria international Frank Onyeka at Coventry.
Onyeka joined the club after Coventry secured promotion and could now share the dressing room with Awoniyi for the 2026/27 Premier League season.
Coventry will face Arsenal in their opening Premier League fixture on 21 August.
Awoniyi’s transfer comes shortly before that match, although his availability for the Arsenal game will depend on the completion of the remaining transfer formalities.
Awoniyi joined Forest for a reported £17 million from Union Berlin in 2022 and scored 10 Premier League goals during his first season at the club.
Now, after four years at the City Ground, he is preparing for a new chapter with Coventry under Lampard.
