Lesley Ugochukwu has moved closer to representing Nigeria after reports emerged that he is close to obtaining a Nigerian passport. Super Eagles NG learnt the Galatasaray midfielder has taken an important step towards becoming eligible for the Super Eagles after previously featuring for France at youth level.
The development raises a key question ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations: could Ugochukwu make Eric Chelle’s squad?
Passport and FIFA Approval Come Before Selection
Obtaining a Nigerian passport is an important requirement, but it does not complete the process.
Ugochukwu has not played a competitive senior international match for France, which means he remains eligible to represent Nigeria if he meets FIFA’s nationality and eligibility rules. The Nigeria Football Federation must also complete the required documentation before he can be considered for international matches.
Once those requirements are met, Eric Chelle will be free to include the midfielder in future Super Eagles squads.
Galatasaray Form Will Decide His AFCON 2027 Chances
Eligibility alone will not guarantee a place at AFCON 2027.
Ugochukwu must establish himself at Galatasaray and maintain consistent performances throughout the season. Strong displays in the Turkish Süper Lig and European competitions would improve his chances of earning a call-up.
He would compete for a midfield place alongside Wilfred Ndidi, Raphael Onyedika, Frank Onyeka, Alhassan Yusuf and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru. Final squad decisions will depend on form, fitness and tactical suitability.
Super Eagles NG will continue to monitor Ugochukwu’s progress as his eligibility process and club performances develop before AFCON 2027.
