Reports linking George Ilenikhena with the Super Eagles have raised fresh questions about Nigeria’s attacking options under Eric Chelle. While Victor Osimhen remains the first-choice striker, the reported arrival of the Al-Ittihad forward could increase competition alongside Victor Boniface ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
According to OwnGoal Nigeria, the 19-year-old has agreed to represent Nigeria after holding talks with Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle. However, the Nigeria Football Federation has not announced his international switch.
Super Eagles NG understands that Ilenikhena has never represented France at senior or youth level in an official international match. As a result, he would not need to complete a one-time nationality switch before becoming available for Nigeria if selected.
George Ilenikhena Gives Eric Chelle Another Striking Option
Chelle has continued to assess Nigeria’s attacking depth since taking charge of the Super Eagles. Therefore, reports linking Ilenikhena with the national team add another name to a forward line led by Victor Osimhen.
OwnGoal Nigeria reported that Chelle had tracked the striker for almost a year. The report added that the coach wanted more competition in attack and viewed Ilenikhena as one of his priority targets.
Born in Nigeria, Ilenikhena moved to France with his family during childhood before beginning his professional career in Europe. He joined Saudi Pro League club Al-Ittihad after leaving AS Monaco earlier this year.
The report also states that the forward initially showed little interest in representing Nigeria before deciding to commit to the Super Eagles.
Ilenikhena Vs Victor Boniface In Nigeria’s Attack
Victor Osimhen remains Nigeria’s leading striker when available. However, Eric Chelle has several other forwards competing for places, including Victor Boniface.
Boniface has established himself in the squad after his performances for Bayer 04 Leverkusen. Meanwhile, Ilenikhena would arrive as one of Nigeria’s youngest attacking options if the reported agreement is completed.
Chelle hopes to include the teenager in Nigeria’s squad for September’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Tanzania. Neither the Nigeria Football Federation nor the player has confirmed the report at the time of publication.
